Announcement: ICAP has now completed its student recruitment through to Fall 2011. However, UBC Continuing Studies has recently added a new program to support undergraduate-level preparation. The new program is named IUSPP, the International Undergraduate Study Preparation Program. Greetings everyone,
I am very excited to be writing today to all ICAP graduates to inform you about a new scholarship.
Starting this year, UBC Continuing Studies will be awarding the Intercultural Communication Advancement Program (ICAP) Scholarship (UBC Award #1431).
As the focus of ICAP is to improve the performance of international undergraduate students in their first years in a North American university, these awards are designed to reward all of your hard work during ICAP.
There are three $1,000 scholarships available. To be eligible, ICAP graduates must be UBC undergraduates who have completed their first year of full time study and be entering their second year of study at The University of British Columbia.
The awards will be based on academic performance and are made on the recommendation of UBC Continuing Studies in consultation with the UBC Office of Student Financial Assistance and Awards.
It is very simple to be considered. Just submit a copy of your first year UBC transcript to ICAP coordinator, David Anderson (david.anderson@ubc.ca) by March 1, 2010. The scholarship recipients will be announced shortly afterward.
The award is first available for the 2009/2010 Winter Session. For more information, please consult the UBC scholarship website at: http://www.students.ubc.ca/finance/awards.cfm?page=search
Or contact David directly (david.r.anderson@ubc.ca / 604.827.4203).
We hope this message finds all of you well. We look forward to hearing of your interest in this scholarship.
Kind regards and Happy New Year!
David Anderson

I am a student from Henan, Zhengzhou province. My name is WU Wen, I started UBC’s ICAP in Sept 2008 as an international student from China. Now I have received UBC’s acceptance (undergraduate admission) in April 2009. There are 16 students in our class. By May 1 this year, we already have 14 students received UBC and Simon Fraser Universitiy's (SFU) 2009 first tier admission. In this program, I feel UBC’s ICAP helped me a lot in adjusting studying life in Canada.
The first three months of the program, I studied at the UBC English Language Institute (ELI). Through an entrance language test, students have been placed in different language levels, and each level has various courses we can choose from.
The language courses focus on listening/speaking, reading and writing, and ELI also arranges variety of language workshops every Friday. We have a lot opportunities to talk to advisors, and this also helped me improved my oral English. After studying at ELI for 3 months, I have reached IELTS 7.0 and was accepted by UBC (undergraduate programs).
This January I passed the test and successfully entered ICAP academic term. In this academic term, I learned further about the environment at universities in Canada, getting to know the “research skills” which Chinese students barely use before, learning how to perform well in an “interview”. The program has also invited some experts in psychology teaching us how to release stresses, managing time effectively for study and rest, which I benefit a lot as a prospective university student.
In early April, I have received my dream university UBC’s first tier Letter of Acceptance. In addition to my effort, I am very thankful to all iCAP teachers for the help and guidance they have provided me. Among them, teacher CAI Ming provided us with many extra help. Before we arrive in Canada, he arranged homestay for us. When we first arrived in Vancouver, some student’s flight was delayed or could not find the gathering place. Teach CAI was very patient and had waited for couple of hours until he had met every students. He also helped us with getting our bank card, sending us to the homestay, driving us and showing us around the campus. In the process of applying universities, teach CAI also gave us a lot of advice and guidance. As all of us in the class are alone here in Vancouver, teach CAI has given us a lot help to avoid unnecessary troubles, both for study and our every day life, which helped us a lot in adjusting life in Vancouver. Now I am looking forward to my upcoming university life in Sept (2009).
Choosing ICAP is a good choice for me in my journey of studying aboard.

After completing ICAP, student ZHU, Mang from Shanghai wanted to pursue an undergraduate program in science. His dream was to study in the UBC Faculty of Science and to gain admission ZHU had to compete with other Canadian and international students. The UBC undergraduate program in science is even more difficult to enter than the engineering program at UBC, but ZHU was ready. In September 2008 his dream came true and ZHU began his first year science studies. With the preparation he recieved from iCAP, ZHU recieved two A+ grades and two A grades after his first term. This is difficult enough for any first year student, but remarkable for an international student. For the A+ he recieved in Physics, ZHU was personally congratulated by Nobel laureate Dr. Carl Wieman on his success. Great work, ZHU Mang!

- University of British Columbia (Vancouver)
- University of Toronto (Toronto)
- Simon Fraser University (Vancouver)
- McMaster University (Hamilton)
