What will the Certificate in International Development do for my employment or salary prospects? This program provides professionals with the opportunity to gain an understanding of key issues in international development and develop relevant skills to effectively work in this field. The UBC Certificate in International Development is a recognized and credible qualification that will be noticed by prospective employers.
I am new to the field of international development. Is this course for me? Our training is designed to capitalize on the experience of our participants while providing access to leaders in the field. Participants must have some prior international or intercultural experience so that each member in a course benefits from the insights of the others. Relevant experience may include: international business or management experience, experience with diverse groups in your workplace or community, international development work, travel or study abroad programs.
Will I get a job in the field of international development if I take this certificate? By taking a course or doing the full certificate, you will have the opportunity to network with facilitators and other participants working in the field of international development – this definitely helps in the job search. In addition, employers will see that you are serious about being prepared for working in this field and are interested in gaining important knowledge and skills to become successful international development practitioners.
How long will it take me to complete the certificate requirements? The amount of time it takes to complete the certificate depends on course availability. As the certificate evolves and more facilitators are in place, there will be regular course offerings throughout the year. Completing the course should take no longer than 3 years.
Should I take more than one course at a time? If you are new to online learning, it is highly suggested that you start taking one course at a time. You should take more than one course at a time only if you are able to dedicate 5-7 hours a week per course.
How do I successfully complete a course? In order to complete a course, you will be required to submit weekly assignments, respond to other participants’ assignments and participate in relevant discussions throughout the course. What we are looking for is your understanding of the concepts and issues being taught and your critical feedback.
Do I have to have access to the Internet in order to participate? Yes. You must have regular access to a computer with email and Internet capabilities.
How much time will I spend online? You should expect to spend 5-7 hours a week on a course. This includes doing the required readings, working on weekly assignments, participating in discussions, and commenting on the submissions of your fellow participants. There are no exams or research papers.
What is your policy on cancellations and withdrawals? Many of our expenses are incurred within the two-week period just before the course. Our cancellation policy reflects the fact that few of these expenses can be recovered in the event of late cancellations. We require notice of withdrawal from a course at least 10 business days before the course begins. Upon giving proper notice, students will be assessed an administrative charge of $50 for refunds of course fees. Students requesting a transfer to another CID course, the full amount will be credited.
We regret that we cannot grant refunds, credits or transfers for cancellations received less than 10 business days before the start of the course except in exceptional circumstances. Continuing Studies is sometimes forced to cancel courses due to insufficient enrollment or other reasons. If this occurs, a full refund is processed and sent to you automatically.
