Required Courses:
The following TWO courses are required to complete the Certificate in International Development.
Culture, Communication and Development
40 hours over 7 weeks, 100% online
What do we need to understand about culture and communication in order to work ethically in the field of international development? The process of international development brings into contact people from “the North” and “the South”. The way they communicate, what they value, how they define development, are profoundly affected by their cultures. Yet these differences in cultural conditioning are often invisible to those engaged in development projects. Learn to recognize the effect of different cultural approaches on international development work and develop strategies for increasing understanding and respectful collaboration. Appreciate the challenges of nurturing equal partnerships in view of our histories of privilege and oppression.

This course provides essential knowledge to implement international development projects in an effective and multidisciplinary manner.
"The issues we discussed in this course broadened my thinking about international development work. I gained a better understanding about international development projects; what they involve, how challenging they are, how many distinct solutions to problems there are, and what proved to be successful." (Agnieszka Zawislak-Bajer)

Elective Courses
Elective courses allow participants to focus on one or more areas of international development. Choose three electives to complete the certificate.
Introduction to International Health and Development
40 hours over 7 weeks, 100% online
There can be no development if people aren’t healthy – what can we do? Examine problems relevant to international health care management. Identify the basic concepts of international health and apply problem-solving skills to international health issues. Topics include intercultural issues, determinants of population health, primary health care strategies, and poverty and malnutrition from an international health perspective.
"I think this should be one of the compulsory courses for a CID. As I have seen in the other courses..., health issues are integral to development work and I think everyone should have at least an introduction to the problems from the health side, not just looking over to it from the social side. So, thanks for having this course as part of the program and, more importantly, for having it open to the non-medical students, like myself. Now, at least, I have a broader perspective and better appreciation for the pervasiveness of the medical issues." (Sharon Vipond).

Project Planning and Proposal Writing

How can we get this project approved and funded? Learn to plan and write project proposals in the field of international development using current tools and frameworks required by donors / funders. Whether you are a consultant seeking contract work, a not-for-profit administrator wishing to refine your project planning skills, a program manager writing a grant proposal, or a student or professional entering the field of international development, this course offers a solid and practical orientation in these critical processes and methods.
Given the complexities involved in planning a project and writing a proposal, there is a lot of important information to be absorbed in this course and the assignment due dates are time sensitive. Please do not register for this course if you are planning to travel or take more than one course while working.
"I feel so prepared right now to get started on proposals - before I wouldn't have known where to even begin. I can't express how useful this has been for me." (Midori Courtice)
"[After taking the course] my understanding of international development has really grown and I am so much more aware of the issues that need to be considered in a process like this. I have a huge binder of comments, articles, etc. that I plan to keep for reference in the future. I know I will find all this very helpful." (Bev Ross)
“This course has been very helpful in seeing the proposal as a combination of steps instead of one big overwhelming project.” (Leah Lockhart)

Education and Development
40 hours over 7 weeks, 100% online
Education is fundamental to development What do we need to know in order to contribute to this field? Look into the complex and rapidly expanding area of education in developing countries. Consider the history of education within the development framework, current global education initiatives, policies and goals, and different approaches to, and emphases on various levels of education. Learn about key nternational players in education including their roles, their influences, and their impact on educational approaches and opportunities for people in developing societies. Take a critical approach to the field through examining the debates surrounding past and present global policies and initiatives.
"When I started this certificate, I think I understood that there was no one answer to international development but I think I was expecting some sort of constant. What I've realized, especially in this course, is that the most important thing is to take your time, get to know the area, and involve the affected population in all levels of decision making. People are so different everywhere!! It really only follows that problems and solutions will be equally as different." (Fiona Goodman)

Migration and Displacement
40 hours over 7 weeks, 100% online
This course explores the contradictions and complexities of migration as a form of displacement of peoples across the globe. Consider how contemporary migration is collapsing boundaries and reconfiguring our notions about the “First World” and the “Third World”, thus challenging us to direct our struggle for global justice locally. Explore the root causes of forced migration and how this is directly linked to survival, including the livelihood and well-being of extended families, communities and remittance-dependent economies. Take a critical approach to the different actors involved and approaches to the field by examining present global policies, initiatives and alternatives to forced migration.
