About Us

Established in 1982, the Centre for Intercultural Communication (CIC) designs and delivers programs to promote effective intercultural communication. In a world that is increasingly interconnected, CIC provides programs and services for individuals, educational institutions, professional associations, government agencies and corporations. Participants develop:

  • a broad range of perspectives and understanding of diverse populations, both multicultural and international
  • self-awareness of personal beliefs and attitudes that influence interactions with colleagues and clients
  • specific skills and strategies for working and learning across cultures.

VISION

CIC envisions a society in which all people are fully able to live, work, grow and engage in equitable and inclusive communities that value diversity in all its forms.

MISSION

CIC provides transformative educational experiences that challenge conventional attitudes and practices, and foster respectful intercultural leadership and engagement across differences.

VALUES

Learning – empowering and supporting ourselves and others to achieve excellence through integrity, self-reflection and awareness.

Curiosity – deepening inquiry and knowledge, and building appreciation across cultures and communities.

Interconnectedness – connecting across differences, perspectives, borders to build capacity as individuals, communities and organizations.

Passion – fueling our spirits to engage and daring us to imagine and seek new possibilities.

Inclusion – creating inclusive and respectful communities that appreciate and value differences.

Social Responsibility – participating actively to create a just world.

STAFF

The CIC staff has extensive international experience in the United States, Korea, China, Japan, India, Europe, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East in business, research and education. The CIC draws upon the expertise of consultants and resource people as required, both externally and within UBC.

CIC instructors and facilitators bring intercultural expertise and experience from their own varied cultural backgrounds.
